An institute for Oriental research and a library operating parallel with the Museum was envisaged by Ferenc Hopp, the founder of the Museum. At that time his plans could not come to fruition. However, Zoltán Felvinczi Takács, first director of the Museum, made further attempts to organise a library, whose principal aim was to help research work in the Museum itself, but also to provide interested readers with less specifique information on the East. At the outset, the book stock of the library increased through the donations and bequests of Hungarian patrons who were interested in the Orient; later, it increased throughregular purchase and development.
Our Library is the only Hungarian reference library for Oriental arts. Its field of collecting embraces the reference literature of Asian and North African art, history, civilization and religion. Currently the book stock consists of more than 28,000 volumes in European and Oriental languages. To this day we place a great value on those few dozens of volumes which were once in the possession of Ferenc Hopp. The collection of Aurél Stein's works and Dr Tibor Horváth's books on Japanese art are other noteworthy units of the book stock. An author catalogue, a special subject catalogue, a continuation record and a source catalogue (currently in the form of a traditional card catalogue) facilitate access to the book stock. For registered readers, books are available for reference and copying; readers in other libraries may have access to to our stock via inter-library loan.
